AN all-new five-speed "Sportshift" automatic transmission fitted standard to Ti and optional on ST Patrols made its debut with the 4.8-litre petrol engine. The auto features a sequential manual shift mode, which gives the driver more control over shift points, both on and off the road. Once a gear is selected in this mode, the transmission will not automatically shift up a gear, therefore making it suitable for off-road work. ST models also offer a five-speed manual transmission mated to the new 4.8-litre engine. Patrol uses a part-time four-wheel drive system, running as rear-drive in normal road conditions. The front hubs on ST and Ti models engage automatically when four-wheel drive is selected. A dual-range transfer case allows the option of high or low final drive ratios. A vacuum-operated differential lock is also fitted standard to the Ti.
