HOLDEN JACKAROO 2D WAGON (1992-1995)
THE 1992 upgrade of the Jackaroo transformed it into a worthy but bland looking and under-rated rival. The 3.0-litre V6 is smooth, relatively frugal and powerful with 130kW on tap. The equipment level is competitive and it is the only other rival offering an automatic.

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2D WAGON (1991-1997)
THE Discovery has good access to the rear seats and much more interior space than this group of rivals. The soft, long travel suspension has good off-road ability and the 3.5-litre V8 has a competitive 115kW while remaining reasonably economical. The permanent 4WD comes with a five-speed manual only.

MITSUBISHI PAJERO 2D HARDTOP (1991-1993)
THIS was the first major restyle for the Pajero since it was introduced and it remains one of the best looking hardtops. The 2.6-litre four is not as powerful as the competition with 79kW but this is adequate for the job. The GL equipment list is similar to the Patrol.

TOYOTA LANDCRUISER 2D HARDTOP (1965-1992)
THE LandCruiser is one generation older than these rivals but its reputation puts it in the same price bracket. Power steering and a limited slip differential are standard. The 4.0-litre six has a competitive power output of 110kW and plenty of low speed torque but is inclined to be thirsty.
