LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 4D WAGON (1991-1999)
THOUGH unassailable off-road, the Discovery is an old-school 4X4 on the tarmac, meaning ponderous handling, alarming fuel consumption and disappointing performance. Tall cabin, stylish, roomy interior, excellent ride and unrivalled class are high points. Questionable reliability issues persist.

JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 4D WAGON (1996-1999)
HANDSOME, well-proportioned American icon well endowed with smooth straight-six power. Fuel consumption reasonable. Cabin is tight in the rear and presentation a little cheap but the Cherokee is well specified. Easy around town and practical, but poor reputation for reliability.

TOYOTA LANDCRUISER PRADO 4D WAGON (1996-2003)
CAR-LIKE steering, handling and very good performance from the V6 engine. Typically Toyota in many ways: impressive build quality and cabin presentation, reliability and resale value. Extra large 159-litre fuel tank.

HOLDEN JACKAROO 4D WAGON (1994-1998)
UNDER-RATED car-like city-slicking 4WD that copes well in the rough despite a slight lack of ground clearance. Plenty of power from the V6 once wound up although fuel consumption is average. Roomy interior, nice dash, plenty of features and lots of luggage space.
