TOYOTA PASEO 2D COUPE (1991-1996)
SIMILAR in concept to the NX, the Paseo has a smaller 1.5-litre engine but is much lighter. The twin cam, 16- valve engine is smooth and revs well. Transmission choices are four-speed auto or five-speed manual, driving the front wheels. Power mirrors, power steering and radio/cassette are standard.

HONDA CRX 2D COUPE (1987-1998)
THE CRX started out as a raw and ready hot-hatch, but then morphed into a very personalised coupe. The latter's 1.6-litre VTEC engine drives the front wheels through a five-speed manual box. The Targa roof gives the best of both worlds. Equipment levels include anti-lock brakes, alloy wheels and central locking.

PEUGEOT 205 3D HATCHBACK (1991-1994)
MORE of a sporting sedan than a purpose-built coupe, the Pug has a willing 1.6-litre engine and choice of four-speed auto or five- speed manual transmissions driving the front wheels. Supple suspension and torquey engine make the 205 a good point-to-point car. Air-conditioning, central locking, power steering, power windows and radio/cassette are standard.

HYUNDAI S 2D COUPE (1991-1996)
THE blandly styled South Korean challenger is Mitsubishi based with a 1.5-litre engine powering the front wheels through five- speed manual or four-speed auto. It may have power mirrors/steering/windows but this Hyundai X2 Excel-based city runabout has very little driver appeal, save for the uncouth turbo from '92.
