Nissan teases mysterious concept

NISSAN has released a teaser image of what appears to be a track-focused high-performance supercar, but whether the vehicle is destined for the road, circuit or confined to a computer game screen is yet to be revealed.

A single image of the new vehicle appeared on Nissan's social media pages and was accompanied by a short statement describing the mysterious car as “the next chapter in the Nissan story”, but for now the Japanese car-maker is staying tight-lipped about the details.

High performance Nissan fans will only have to wait until June 16 when more information about its newest concept will be revealed “to an audience that has always shared our passion for performance”.

The enigmatic concept is being widely reported as Nissan's latest entry to the sixth-generation video game sensation Gran Turismo, but Nissan is yet to confirm if the car will debut in the game or go beyond the screen and on to the black-top.

Nissan's current flagship GT-R is still one of the most potent high-performance cars on the road, but at seven years old, its replacement is almost certainly under development now and this concept could be a first glimpse.

Since the first version in 1998, the Sony-developed Gran Turismo driving simulator has been a platform for vehicle manufacturers to unveil concepts, and in recent years more brands have turned to the software manufacturer for exposure.

Earlier this month, Mitsubishi announced that its XR-PHEV Evolution concept would be made available in the racing simulator, while Volkswagen announced in May that its radical GTI Roadster was also destined for the game.

Only a few details of Nissan's concept can be seen in the teaser image, but the heavily aerodynamic body and low-profile tyres wrapped around weed-knife spoked wheels would fit into the Gran Turismo racer aesthetic.

Gulping front air-intakes hint at a vehicle that needs a lot of brake cooling while similarly large ducting toward the rear of the car suggests a hefty engine or hybrid system sits behind the occupants.
