Morgan Runabout set for walkabout

BY MALCOLM LIVERMORE | 9th Apr 2003

VENERABLE English sports car manufacturer Morgan has confirmed its latest model, the Runabout, will go on sale in Australia.

While Morgan Cars Australia talks of the car being a "value for money" model, it will still cost $85,000 when available for delivery later this year.

The Runabout is based on the evergreen 4/4 model, sharing its 1.8-litre Ford Focus engine and five-speed manual transmission. The engine develops 84kW from its 1798cc capacity, enough to accelerate the Runabout from zero to 100-km/h in 8.9 seconds.

That performance is assisted by the light weight (880kg) of the Runabout, which has an all-aluminium body over a traditional ash frame, which is in turn mounted on a galvanized steel chassis.

The Runabout for Australia will include twin airbags, side intrusion bars in the doors and a radio fitting kit.

Only three options are available for our Runabout - radio/ CD, underseal and a photo record of the car being built.

The Runabout models are all trimmed in black vinyl and charcoal cloth trim, with black PVC weather protection.

From 2003 production, all new Morgan sports cars for Australia feature the new style "Le Mans 62 look" dash layout. The repositioned dials are now cream faced, with brushed aluminium bezels.
