WITH the introduction of the NL series Pajero in 1997, Mitsubishi replaced the previous "quad" camshaft V6 with a new single camshaft per bank 3.5-litre V6.

This engine is carried over into the NM. More tuned to the needs of a large 4WD, the new engine produces stronger torque in the important mid-range, if a little less power at the top end. Benefits other than the torque include improved fuel economy (by a claimed maximum of up 10 per cent). Although it's only a single-camshaft design, the engine still breathes efficiently through four valves per cylinder.
