WITHOUT doubt one of Evo's best attributes, the 2.0-litre DOHC 16-valve inline four-cylinder produces 206kW at 6500rpm and 373Nm of torque at just 3000rpm on 100-octane fuel. And it feel like it too. As docile as any Lancer engine at low revs, the Evo mill fires up quickly to offer a phenomenal wall of torque in the midrange, but it also has a top-end to die for - all the way to 7000rpm. Compression is a low 8.8:1 but Evo breaks tradition with long-stroke bore dimensions and a titanium turbocharger to produce a specific power figure of more than the magical 100kW per litre mark. Differences to the rally car engine are few, including a 34mm inlet air restrictor, and the result is 300hp instead of 280. A mass of turbo plumbing lies under the bonnet but, unlike the WRX, Evo's intercooler is positioned not on top of, but most effectively at the front of the engine. Ralliart recommends 98-octane fuel, but says Evo will live on regular 96-octane PULP.
