Mitsubishi recalls Lancer

BY MARTON PETTENDY | 4th May 2010

MITSUBISHI has issued a nationwide safety recall notice for 982 examples of its current CJ-series Lancer due to potential tyre failure, while a potential clutch defect has also seen 234 versions of the Lancer Evo recalled.

In the latter case, Mitsubishi advises that the strength of the wire clip retaining the oil pressure pipe to the clutch master-cylinder may be insufficient, allowing the pipe to become disconnected during clutch operation, resulting in fluid loss and clutch failure.

Mitsubishi will mail the owners of affected vehicles on May 12, requesting them to contact their Mitsubishi dealer to replace the retaining clip.

The recall affects MY09 Lancer Evolution models with VINs ranging between JMFSNCZ4A9U000001 and JMFSNCZ4A9U000438, and JMYSNCZ4A9U000274 and JMYSNCZ4A9U000750, as well as MY10 Lancer Evos with VINs between JMFSNCZ4AAU000208 and JMFSNCZ4AAU000221, and JMYSNCZ4AAU000202 and JMYSNCZ4AAU000203.

Meantime, Mitsubishi says a production problem during the wheel and tyre assembly process may have resulted in a tear in the tyre sidewall of a number of Lancer models released in Australia from October 2007.

Mitsubishi says it will contact the owners of all affected vehicles by mail on May 19, requesting them to contact their local Mitsubishi dealer for inspection and replacement of affected tyres, which could suffer pressure loss.

Included in the recall are CJ Lancers carrying VINs ranging between JMFLMCX4AAU000216 and JMFLMCX4AAU000285, JMFLNCX5AAU000339 and JMFLNCX5AAU000402, JMFLTCX5AAU000367 and JMFLTCX5AAU000447, JFMSMCY4AAU000373 and JFMSMCY4AAU000530, JMFSNCY5AAU000572 and JMFSNCY5AAU000791, and JMFSTCY5AAU000685 and JMFSTCY5AAU0001094.
