CONSTANT 4WD and a high-performance turbocharged four-cylinder engine powering an easily affordable and controllable four-door sedan... if this sounds like I'm talking about the epochal Subaru Impreza WRX from 1994, then read on. Because, unbelievably, Mitsubishi had that recipe home and hosed two years earlier with the then all-new CC Lancer. The GSR 4WD wowed critics with its turbocharged 1.8-litre engine pumping out 145kW of power and 255Nm of torque, as well as its amazing handling, roadholding and all-weather grip. That it failed to catapult the Mitsubishi into the hearts and minds of keen drivers and aspiring computer game geeks alike is a mystery, because it didn't take Subaru too long to do just that with a very similar recipe. I guess there's something to be said about the timing...
