HONDA CIVIC 3D HATCHBACK (1987-1991)
Superb styling inside and out clothe a sporty and involving three-door hatchback with plenty of cabin space thanks to a low and long seating position. 1.5 engine is powerful, efficient and utterly reliable. Parts and servicing can be expensive though. Double wishbone suspension ensures great handling too.

TOYOTA COROLLA 5D HATCHBACK (1989-1994)
THE benchmark for this class. Front-wheel drive, twin cam 1.6 engine is zippy, economical and reliable, especially when mated to the five-speed manual. Auto is good too. Rear space is a bit cramped but overall the quality and reputation of the Toyota makes it (and its Holden Nova clone) hard to resist.

NISSAN N14 PULSAR 5D HATCHBACK (1991-1995)
AN appealing small car with an advanced and reliable 1.6 twin-cam engine that's sweet to rev and good on fuel too. Handling, ride and steering properties are above average, all in a comfortable and refined package that's aged very well. Rear legroom is cramped but boot space is excellent. The 2.0 is a rocket.

MAZDA 323 Astina 5D HATCHBACK (1989-1994)
IN the upper bracket with impressive equipment including 1840cc, multi-point fuel-injected, 16-valve engine, four-speed auto or five-speed manual. Central locking and power steering standard. Fully imported, excellent build quality. Reliability is good and spare parts are reasonably priced. A real sweet car.
