AFTER nearly 10 years of the RA-RE series Colt, Mitsubishi reverted to importing its small cars from Japan, and the Lancer name was reborn. Initially available as a 56kW 1.5-litre four-door sedan in GLX and well-equipped SE guises, a base GL sedan, GL, GLX, and SE five-door hatchbacks, and a sporty SX 3-door hatchback joined the burgeoning range from September 1989. Their mission was to seek and destroy the Laser, Corolla and Pulsar small car segment leaders. In September '90 the CB series set-in, featuring a small facelift, revised cabin trim, an improved automatic gearbox, and the addition of more standard features. These paled against the standard inclusion of new 65kW 1.5-litre multi-valve engine across the range, as well as the introduction of the sporty GSR hatchbacks fitted with a stonking 90kW 1.6-litre twin-cam 16-valve 4-cylinder unit. By the way, the CB-based 65kW "CC GL five-door hatchback" and 77kW "CC GLXi five-door hatchbacks" lived on right through the proper (read: all-new) CC-series Lancer sedans and coupes until July ’96, when the CE range was launched.
