Concept-Sportback points to next generation Lancer

MITSUBISHI’S Sportback show car unveiled at Frankfurt last week might be labelled a concept, however Mitsubishi Motors Europe chief executive, Tim Tozer, has confirmed that the new-generation Lancer will look very similar.

Both sedan and hatch versions will be offered in the all-new Lancer, with the hot Evo X model featuring both a close-ratio six-speed manual and an Audi-DSG style dual-clutch automatic, according to European sources.

The Evo will also offer new dynamic and stability aides to enhance its on-road performance.

Mitsubishi also intends to offer a lower-spec 2.0-litre turbo under the Evo to allow a stepping-stone for the bread-and-butter models.

The new Lancer is expected to be the same length as the current car but a longer wheelbase will offer more interior room.

Mr Tozer said the new Lancer was fundamental to rebuilding the company’s brand image, both in Europe and the rest of the world.

Expected to make it into production car is the Sportback’s aggressive front end, which resembles a shark’s mouth. The styling was executed at Mitsubishi’s Trebur design centre, near Frankfurt.
