MITSUBISHI'S Challenger roots are found in the previous generation Triton ute. It is smaller than the Pajero 4WD but slightly more rugged in orientation. The good-looking Challenger gets most of the Pajero's creature comforts and 4WD systems, and with the facelift which came in September 2000 it traded its leaf spring rear suspension for much more sophisticated coil springs. But that was far from all, with a significant update of the looks, a new transmission and a new up-spec LS model all part of the model revamp.
