Prices stable at the ASX

LIKE other Mitsubishi models clocking over to the 2012 model year, the ASX receives minor interior and exterior cosmetic changes and the availability of a rear-view camera and rear parking sensors, albeit primarily bound-up in extra-cost packages.

The ASX is the only MY12 Mitsubishi model not to be hit with price increases.

Given that the 2WD models account for more than 70 per cent of ASX sales, they have been given the most attention for MY12 with the addition of two option packs.

A $500 Convenience Pack adds reversing sensors, Bluetooth and steering wheel-mounted controls while a $3700 Luxury Pack includes Bluetooth, steering wheel controls, auto-dimming interior mirror with rear view monitor, leather seats (the front pair heated) and power driver’s seat adjustment, 17-inch alloys, front fog lights and chrome exterior highlights.

New seat trim material, a rear-seat centre armrest with cupholders and new interior finishes feature across the board.

The ASX mechanical package is unchanged, coming with a 2.0-litre 110kW/197Nm petrol engine combined with a five-speed manual or CVT auto in 2WD or 4WD, and a 4WD-only 1.8-litre 110kW/300Nm turbo-diesel linked to a six-speed manual only.

The ASX joined the Outlander in the popular compact SUV segment in August 2010 and has been a solid performer for Mitsubishi, with sales totalling 4626 units for the first nine months of the year, which represents a segment market share of 5.2 per cent.

It has fared better than some other relatively new compact entrants such as the Kia Sportage, which this year has achieved 2668 sales for a 3.0 per cent share.

And last month the ASX pipped Outlander with 651 sales to 625 to win the family battle, though the larger Outlander remains ahead YTD with 5636 sales for a 6.3 per cent segment share.
