MITSUBISHI Australia's new 380 sedan has received a boost from the latest motoring association security ratings, which placed it first among Australian-built vehicles.

The 380 scored 74.5 points out of a possible 120, which was well ahead of the 2004 Magna’s rating of 63.5 and outscored Commodore (59.5), Camry (58), Falcon (57.5) and Avalon (57).

Across the field, Audi was the standout marque, claiming the top four places in the survey. The A6 was rated the most secure vehicle tested, with 116.5 points.

Big improvers included the Toyota HiLux, Mitsubishi Outlander, Hyundai Sonata, Subaru Outback and Land Rover’s Range Rover.

Conducted in conjunction with the Insurance Australia Group, the security ratings attempt to measure the theft resistance of a new car being broken into and then stolen.

This year, 51 of the 116 vehicles tested failed to score 60 or more. The Mazda Bravo scored zero.
