Mini 5-door One arrives in Oz

MINI Australia has added a new, entry level variant to its 5-door hatch range with the One kicking the model off from $26,050 before on-road costs.

This places it $1700 below the 5-door Cooper, priced at $27,750, and makes it significantly cheaper than the Cooper D ($32,900) and Cooper S ($38,050) variants.

This also makes the new 5-door $1550 more expensive than the cheapest Mini available, its three-door hatch One cousin, which is priced from $24,500.

Much like the three-door, the 5-door One is also powered by a reworked and detuned Cooper engine, making 75kW of power and 180Nm of torque from the turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine.

By comparison, the larger displacement 1.5-litre turbo three in the Cooper makes 100kW/220Nm, a difference of 25kW and 40Nm.

The new 5-door variant comes standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, with rev matching technology as standard, and will return fuel economy figures as low as five litres per 100 kilometres.

An automatic option is available for an additional $2350 across the entire 5-door range.

Standard equipment includes rear park assist, idle-stop, Bluetooth connectivity, USB input and 15-inch steel wheels.

Mini Australia general manager Kai Bruesewitz said that the new One will give consumers more options when looking at the brand's burgeoning 5-door range, which was introduced in October last year.

“It offers the perfect stepping stone into the Mini line-up, promising trademark driving fun and 5-door versatility at a price point, which is extremely attractive,” he said.

“The new Mini One is an exciting new addition to our product range, particularly in light of the strong performance of the 5-door concept since its launch in Australia last year.”The introduction of a new base variant 5-door also undercuts – by $450 – segment competitor, the Audi A1, which starts at $26,500.

The baby Audi is equipped with a 1.2-litre TFSI engine making 63kW of power and 160Nm of torque, and is paired exclusively to a five-speed manual gearbox.
