LA show: Maybach teases convertible

MERCEDES-MAYBACH will pull the covers from a new ultra-exclusive S650 Cabriolet at the Los Angeles motor show this week, revealing a Mercedes S-Class-based model that takes luxury to another level.

No technical detail is offered in the short teaser video that was released via the German car-maker’s social media channel, but the 650 boot badge suggests that it will share the same turbocharged 6.0-litre V12 as the Mercedes-AMG S65.

Power is yet to be officially confirmed and the mighty Maybach could adopt the full 463kW/1000Nm of the AMG variety or a version in Maybach’s own tailored state of tune, but the car-maker has been forced to reveal at least one small clue.

As with any United States vehicle advertising, manufacturers are legally required to publish fuel consumption and emissions data and Maybach has obliged with the S650’s figures appearing in feint small print at the start of the film.

A fuel consumption figure of 12.0L/100km and emissions of 272g per kilometre match those of the Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet which appears conclusive that the Maybach is destined to share the same beefy output and zero to 100km/h acceleration of 4.1 seconds.

The S650 Cabriolet’s centre console reveals that the posh convertible will be limited to just 300 examples and will feature abundant quilted leather, a Burmester sound system, polished wood and chrome as part of the full Maybach treatment.

Beyond that morsel of information, big Merc fans will have to wait until the official show reveal on November 16, when the full extent of its four seats, expansive fabric roof and opulent interior will be rolled out.
