Full-time four-wheel drive with an electronic two-speed transfer case marks the ML 320 as unique in the compact four-wheel drive sector

The M-class is produced at a purpose-built factory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama

The short front and rear overhang provides good clearance when tackling rough terrain and helps manoeuvrability in tight situations

The M-class features the traditional Mercedes-Benz face with teardrop-shaped headlamp clusters and the three-pointed star on the grille

Power comes from a three-valve, 3.2-litre V6 that generates 160kW at 5600rpm and 310Nm at 3000rpm

Mercedes-Benz says the M-class can accelerate from standstill to 100km/h in 9.7 seconds

Power is relayed to all four wheels by an electronically controlled five-speed automatic transmission

Suspension is by independent double wishbone all-around which gives the M-class car-like handling capabilities on tarmac

The 4-ETS four-wheel electronic traction control system ensures maximum grip in all conditions and eliminates the need for complex differential locks

Four-wheel discs are governed by a four-channel anti-lock braking system

Dual front and side airbags are among the standard features

Mercedes-Benz says the ML 320 has a class-leading drag coefficient of 0.39, which maximises fuel economy and minimises wind noise
