THE CLK relies on recirculating ball steering, unlike the new C-class and S-class, which use rack-and-pinion systems. The recirculating ball set-up is getting a bit dated now and will be turfed when the new CLK makes its debut in 2003. The system works well enough but even Mercedes concedes the recirculating ball system is not quite as sharp as its rack-and-pinion set-up.
