First look: New CL takes a bow

A SURPRISINGLY low-key Mercedes-Benz has revealed images and details of a redesigned version of its flagship CL-class coupe, which eschews the current model’s once-trademark twin headlights for a pair of distinctly BMW-style single headlights that, officially: "set the mould for a new Mercedes style".

Borrowing design cues from the CLS-class four-door, the new CL also features a heavily rounded roofline, a prominent twin-louvre chromed grille and a downwards-tapering C-pillar reminiscent of Benz coupes stretching back to the 1950s.

So far only the CL500 (powered by Mercedes’ new 285kW/530Nm 5.5-litre V8) and CL600 (powered by a more powerful, 380kW/830Nm version of the Maybach-sourced 5.5-litre twin-turbo V12) have been revealed.

The new CL500 now sprints to 100km/h in a claimed 5.4 seconds (down from 6.3), while the CL600 does it in 4.6 seconds (down from 4.8 seconds).



Despite an extra 12kW and 30Nm, the biturbo V12 consumes 0.4L/100km less fuel than the outgoing CL600. Expect base pricing to increase from the current CL500’s $288,900 sticker price.

Replacements for the current AMG CL variants are yet to appear, but should comprise a CL63 AMG to replace the 368kW/700Nm supercharged 5.4-litre V8 CL55 AMG ($367,900), and a new CL65 AMG to replace the current range-toppper ($459,900).

Larger in every dimension, the new CL is 5065mm long (up 75mm), 1871mm wide (up 14mm) and 1418mm high (up 20mm), improving space and comfort for all four occupants. Boot space increases 40 litres to 490 litres.

Of course, all of Mercedes’ top-shelf technologies are included, such as a revised version of the company’s COMAND interior control system, which now features a large, pivoting colour display next to the instrument cluster.

Also included as standard are "Integral" seats that incorporate all seatbelt systems, a new generation of M-B’s Active Body Control suspension system, the five-function Intelligent Lighting System and the latest pre-emptive PreSafe safety system.

New optional CL equipment will include Night View Assist infrared headlights, a reversing camera, radio voice control and a tyre-pressure monitoring system.
