Mercedes-Benz celebrates C-Class anniversary

MERCEDES-BENZ has marked the 30th year of C-Class production with an Edition 30 equipment upgrade package on entry-level C200 BlueEfficiency petrol and C200 CDI BlueEfficiency diesel sedans.

The $3390 pack comprises satellite navigation, reversing camera, sunroof and 17-inch alloy wheels, and takes the cost of the petrol C200 BE to $61,990 (plus on-road costs) and the C200 CDI BE to $64,290.

Benz claims the limited-run Edition 30 pack represents a saving of more than $3000 compared with separately specifying the extras from the options list.

The pack also celebrates more than 30,000 current-generation C-Class sales in Australia since the model went on sale in July 2007.

In the same period, BMW sold about 23,000 3 Series sedans and wagons, Audi sold roughly 16,000 A4s and Lexus about 14,000 IS sedans, making the C-Class at least 33 per cent more successful than its closest competitor.

The addition of standard idle-stop technology to four-cylinder petrol C-Class sedans and wagons earlier this year brought combined fuel consumption figures below seven litres per 100 kilometres.

This yielded sticker price savings of up to $2300 as the moved brought these models below the federal government’s fuel efficiency threshold for the luxury car tax.

Official combined fuel consumption of the petrol C200 BE dropped from 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres to 6.8L/100km, while the diesel C200 CDI BE uses 5.4L/100km.

Mercedes-Benz sales, including vans, are up 2.8 per cent so far this year, with C-Class sales roaring ahead with a 24.1 per cent increase and 2149 sold year-to-date.

The company does not expect to beat arch-rival BMW for passenger car and SUV sales in Australia this year due to restricted supply of the new B-Class small car and M-Class SUV.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Edition 30 pricing (plus on-road costs):
C200 BE sedan (a) $61,990
C200 CDI BE sedan (a)$64,290
