AT the heart of the C180 lies a newly designed 1.998-litre DOHC 16-valve inline four-cylinder delivering 95kW at 5300rpm and 185Nm of torque at just 3500rpm. The compression ratio is a fairly high 10.6:1, as is the redline at 6500rpm. Highly oversquare bore dimensions of 89.9 x 78.7mm mean the C180's 2.0-litre engine likes to rev and can sound on the loud side, but there is good torque on offer right from idle - enough to make the supercharged version of the same engine found in the C200K seem somewhat pointless.
