Benz coupe brakes like no other

MERCEDES-BENZ has unveiled a super-quick version of its sexy CL 55 AMG, but it is the car's stopping power that has the manufacturer shouting from the rooftops. Just 55 examples of the CL 55 AMG "F1 Limited Edition" will be built, priced at $275,000 in its home market. Available only as a left-hand drive, none of the limited-edition CL 55s are destined for Australia at this stage. Powered by a 5.5-litre V8 engine that generates a hefty 265kW, it is based on the CL 55 AMG safety car used for all 17 rounds of the Formula One world championship. The sleek coupe rides on huge 19-inch wheels shod with 255/40 ZR 19 tyres at the front and 285/35 ZR 19 tyres at the rear, distinguishing it as a genuine supercar. The German car-maker says the limited edition model is the world's first road-going vehicle to be equipped with an ultra-high-performance ceramic braking system. The internally ventilated brake discs - made from fibre-reinforced ceramics - are likely to be offered early next year as optional equipment for the AMG-tweaked S 55 and CL 55 models. Lower unsprung weight is one of the key benefits of the ceramic brakes as each disc tips the scales at about 6kg less than its steel equivalent. Other advantages include a high resistance to heat and continuous stresses, low maintenance and a long operating life. The extremely low thermal expansion of the ceramic brakes reduces juddering when the brakes are hot. Mercedes-Benz says the lighter brake discs also ensure the steering of the CL 55 AMG "F1 Limited Edition" is more responsive and precise. In addition, the weight saving has a positive effect on ride comfort.
