MERCEDES’ move to a sportier, more coupe-focussed small car to take on the popular Audi A3 Sportback and BMW 1 Series has certainly paid off, with the third-generation A-Class often near or at the top of its sales class despite ongoing criticisms about ride and cabin quality perceptions.

Now there’s a Series II that suggests the Germans have been listening.
