McMurtry to unwrap Speirling Pure at FoS

GLOUSTERSHIRE based McMurtry Automotive might not be a household name – well, at least not to those outside of the British Cotswolds – but since 2016 the innovative electric hypercar maker has been shaking cages and breaking records with extraordinarily fast, and technologically brilliant, compact designs.

The company’s pint-sized Speirling hypercar shattered the Goodwood Hillclimb record last year with ex-Formula 1 driver Max Clinton at the wheel. Setting a 39.08 second pass, the Speirling shaved 0.8 seconds from the previous record set by Romain Dumas in the Volkswagen ID.R back in 2019.

Now, McMurtry has announced that it will build 100 examples of the Speirling Pure for lucky, cashed-up buyers. A validation preproduction model will take to the ‘hill’ at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month with customer deliveries slated for 2025.

The Speirling Pure will hit 60mph (96km/h) in a neck-stretching 1.4 seconds and set you back a cool £820,000 before tax, or $A1,545,310.

Nestled within a carbon-fibre monocoque body measuring 3450mm long, 1580mm wide and 1020mm high is a 745kW electric motor and Molicel-sourced 60kWh battery pack McMurtry says can be charged in 20 minutes and provide enough power to complete 10 laps of the Silverstone National circuit in anger.

The rear-wheel drive car’s top speed is listed at 306km/h.

“Proving the Speirling’s advantage via the outright hill climb record at Goodwood was a proud life achievement. Since then, it’s been rewarding to see what customers can achieve in the driving seat too,” said McMurtry development driver and ex-Formula 1 racer, Max Chilton.

“It’s hugely satisfying to be part of the company that are bringing this game changing technology to driving enthusiasts”.

Keeping the sub-1000kg Speirling Pure earthbound is a patented on-demand fan system which generates downforce as required. It rides on 18-inch wheels with 270/65 slicks up front and 300/68 slicks up back. Cornering forces of 3g or more are possible.

The suspension is said to an improved version of the record-setting predecessor, so too the electrical architecture, brakes, chassis, gearbox and thermal management system. Anti-lock brakes are optional.

An adjustable pedal box is also standard, McMurtry says a driver measuring up to 200cm in height and weighing up to 150kg can be accommodated in the single-seat cockpit.

“The Speirling Pure will herald a new era on the track. The sound, grip, acceleration, aesthetics and technology of this car are distinct,” said McMurtry founding director, Thomas Yates.

“Witnessing the car as a spectator or from the cockpit offers a rare and exhilarating experience. With pre-orders from around the globe, I can’t wait for fan cars at the racetrack to become a new normality.”

The Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place from July 13 – 16.
