IT’S been a long-time coming, with both global and near-catastrophic internal crises delaying the project for several years, but at last the fourth-generation MX-5 is on sale in Australia – at least, for now, in intriguing 1.5-litre roadster guise.

As you might expect from a Mazda, this one is lighter, sharper and edgier in all the right ways, without sacrificing the unadulterated connection between car and driver.

That the Japanese car-maker has managed to make a brilliant two-seater convertible for less than the price of a VW Golf GTI surely makes this one of this year’s most beguiling bargains.
