Mazda announces details of CX-80 SUV

MAZDA has revealed its all-new CX-80 in Europe this week, the three-row take on the CX-60 expected to arrive in Australia before the end of this year.

 

At almost five metres long and with a wheelbase of over three metres, the CX-80 is both longer and higher than its two-row stablemate, and offers fold flat third-row seating, as well as the availability of six- or seven-seat configurations.

 

Evoking the latest evolution of Mazda’s Kodo design language, and brimming with the latest in connectivity and safety technology, the CX-80 offers connected services technology – as debuted recently in the revised MX-5 roadster – in conjunction with the MyMazda app, and a new Trailer Hitch View which uses the central display and “advanced graphics” to help position the vehicle relative to a trailer.

 

Mazda will offer the CX-80 with a choice of powertrains familiar to other new gen CX models. The e-Skyactiv plug-in hybrid leads the range with a total system output of 241kW/500Nm.

 

As observed elsewhere, the unit combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor to provide what Mazda says is “engaging performance” and “excellent environmental credentials”.

 

Alternatively, the CX-80 range is available with Mazda’s newly minted six-cylinder e-Skyactiv petrol and diesel engines with mild hybrid assistance.

 

All three units are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Mazda’s acclaimed rear-biased i-Activ all-wheel drive system. All alternatives offer the choice of four driving modes (plus EV mode in the plug-in hybrid) as part of Mazda’s Mi-Drive system.

 

The CX-80 rides on a double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension arrangement familiar to other new gen’ CX models. It is also endowed with the latest Mazda i-Activsense driver assistance technologies including adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go functionality, new unresponsive driver support (also on the next-in-line CX-70), autonomous emergency braking, emergency lane keeping, and new head-on traffic avoidance assist.

 

Mazda Australia says further specification, including pricing and Australian delivery timing, will be announced later.
