RACK and pinion steering, with variable power assistance related to engine speed is standard in the 626. This means the slower the engine is spinning, the more power assistance is applied for easy parking. At higher speeds the assistance is reduced to prevent any straight-line over-sensitivity. This is helped further by lowering the steering pump's flow rate from 4.8 to 4.5 litres per minute. The system uses a relatively fast ratio of 15.8:1, going from lock to lock in 3.1 turns.
