AS THE one-tonne ute market becomes more sophisticated and expensive, it has opened a gap for the more traditional, basic workhorse such as the Mahindra Pik-Up, introduced here last year. Available via a limited Australian dealer network, Mahindra's ute is available in one specification level and with one diesel-manual powertrain configuration. But in both rear-drive or four-wheel drive guise, and in both single-cab or dual-cab bodystyles, it handles an impressive payload and simplicity of construction, at a sensible price - qualities that will appeal to the ute buyer looking for a no-nonsense workhorse. But don't expect class-leading performance, dynamics or quality.
