UNTIL the 2000 model year, the Elise used aluminium disc brakes which saved a great deal of weight over materials such as cast iron. However, the aluminium discs have proven unsatisfactory during sustained competition and track work - where the car spends much of its time - and as a result Lotus engineers have swallowed an increase in unsprung weight with the standard fitment of steel brakes.
