THE Freelander makes do with either an 88kW/165Nm 1.8-litre petrol engine also found in the MGF roadster, or a 72kW/210Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel. The 1796cc petrol engine driven here is a 16-valve, twin cam unit tuned to run on standard unleaded fuel, unlike the MGF. Independent testing shows just how much the 1.8 struggles under the 1.5 tonne kerb weight, barely breaking 12 seconds for the 0-100km/h dash.
