ALL Freelanders use 262mm solid front discs and 254mm rear drum brakes, with four-channel anti-lock brakes standard on XE and optional elsewhere. ABS monitors wheels 250 times per second and adjusts braking pressure if wheel lock-up is detected. It works in conjunction with Electronic Traction Control which applies braking force and re-distributes the power to the wheels with most grip. Rather than use a low-range transfer gearbox, the Freelander uses an ABS-linked downhill crawling system called Hill Descent Control.
