TWIN front airbags, four-channel anti-lock brakes and four-wheel electronic traction control are standard on the XE wagon. All five seating positions have individual lap/sash seatbelts and adjustable headrests. An under-bonnet inertia switch automatically unlocks the doors and isolates the fuel pump on petrol versions if there is an accident. Side impact beams were designed into the doors diagonally rather than added in later and the door latches are a claimed to be 250 per cent stronger than legally required. Freelander was the first vehicle to use a new Rover/BMW door latch mechanism, which exceeded the legal anti-burst load requirement by 2.5 times.
