MITSUBISHI PAJERO 2D HARDTOP (1991-1993)
ALTHOUGH a capable off-roader, the Pajero is underpowered with its carburettor-equipped 2555cc engine having to move 2200kg plus its load. A 3.0-litre V6 was standard from 1993. A five-speed manual gearbox drives through a transfer box. Manual front hubs. Five seats but limited luggage space because of short wheelbase.

HOLDEN JACKAROO 2D WAGON (1992-1995)
THE least sophisticated of the range, although the fuel-injected 3165cc V6 engine is a strong point and weight is a light 1795kg, giving good performance. Styling is boxy and unexciting. Choice of five-speed manual or four-speed auto. Accommodation for five with reasonable luggage space.

NISSAN PATROL 2D HARDTOP (1988-1995)
THE Patrol is a gutsy, if slightly outdated 4WD. It is outback strong and with a powerful 4169cc, in-line six-cylinder, carburettor engine with massive torque, will go anywhere you are game to take it. Transmission choices are five-speed manual or four-speed auto. Room for five with a limited luggage area due to short wheelbase. For the serious off-roader.

TOYOTA LANDCRUISER 2D HARDTOP (1992-1999)
FOR reliability, service back-up and sheer "outbackworthiness", the TLC stands alone. Massive carburettor-equipped, 4477cc, straight six engine has huge torque, coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox. Not flashy, but ruggedly built. Stands alone as a 4WD that will do the job - any job.
