Lambo smashes sales records, again

BY MATT BROGAN | 15th Apr 2022

LAMBORGHINI sales are going from strength to strength with the Sant’Agata-based brand setting a record global delivery figure of 2539 vehicles in Q1 2022 – its best quarter on record. The figure represents a five per cent increase over the same period last year and a whopping 31 per cent rise over the January-to-March period for 2020.

The result comes on the back of record-breaking 2021 when the company registered 8405 unit sales for the calendar year, as well as a record turnover of €1.95 billion ($A2.8 billion) and a best-ever profitability margin of 20.2 per cent.

The Italian supercar maker says sales distribution in Q1 of 2022 remained balanced among the three macro-regions of the EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) at 40 per cent, America at 32 per cent, and the Asia Pacific region at 28 per cent. It said almost all markets saw growth in their figures, with the exception of Russia, of course, where the company suspended its operations owing to the Russian-Ukraine conflict.

And it appears Lamborghini’s sales boom is almost entirely down to one model – the Urus SUV. Approximately half of the brand’s sales are attributable to its performance SUV; the remaining 50 per cent comprised of a mix of Huracan and Aventador variants – despite the latter (V12-powered) model reaching the end of its production cycle.

Lamborghini says the most recent level of growth in sales of Urus and Huracan variants (with 1547 and 844 units delivered worldwide, respectively) was comparable to that of the first quarter of 2021. It says it expects sales of the recently unveiled Huracan Tecnica to further bolster its V10-model sales and promises further model announcements in the second part of the year – two for the Urus and one for the Huracan.

“Every month the orders we take outstrip production,” said Lamborghini chairman and CEO Stephan Winkelmann.

“We’ve made a solid start to a year that will bring new challenges on a global scale. Despite the uncertainty caused by a geopolitical situation, which is not only deeply distressing but also means it is hard to make forecasts of any kind, we can count on exceptional appeal worldwide right now.

“We currently have enough (orders) to comfortably cover more than 12 months of production. In addition, we’re preparing for a new stage in the Lamborghini story in just under a year as we move towards electrification with the arrival of the new V12 hybrid model in 2023.”
