THE transmission choice for Spectra is between the standard five-speed manual and an optional electronic four-speed automatic with torque converter lock-up on the top three ratios. The automatic uses a linear force solenoid for smoother gearshifts regardless of the accelerator position, which according to the manufacturer is further enhanced by the engine management system and gearbox control system working in tandem to provide smooth, responsive shifts. Modifications to the automatic gearbox in the most recent update aimed to provide better shift performance and enhanced fuel economy.
