Jeep recalls Compass, Patriot over lights hiccup

FIAT Chrysler Group Australia has issued a safety recall for its current-model small Jeep SUV twins, the Compass and Patriot, to fix a potential electrical fault that can cause the wrong front daytime running light to turn off when the indicators are used.

The recall, announced on New Year’s Day, affects 394 of the just-released 2014 MK Compass and Patriot.

According to the official announcement on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission website, when the turn indicator is switched on, the adjacent daytime running light is supposed to turn off in compliance with Australia Design Rules.

But due to a wiring mix up, the daytime running light (DRL) on the opposite side of the car might switch off.

“DRLs that do not function as intended make the vehicle less conspicuous in traffic and may increase the potential for a motor vehicle accident,” the statement says.

Letters are being sent to owners asking them to make an appointment at their Jeep dealer to have the vehicle inspected and, if necessary, repaired.

The updated 2014 Jeep Compass was revealed at the 2013 Detroit motor show in January, gaining a six-speed automatic transmission, side airbags and other improvements.

According to official VFACTS sales figures, Fiat Chrysler Group sold 5701 combined Compasses and Patriots in 2013 to the end of November, up 25 per cent on 2012.

The joint models are Jeep’s second-best sellers after the flagship Grand Cherokee.
