HYUNDAI is continuing its diesel roll-out with the new Sonata CRDi. Buoyed by the success of its diesel i30 hatch, Hyundai is expecting big things from the diesel version of its mid-sized sedan, which replaces the petrol V6 version and costs $30,490 - a $2500 premium over the four-cylinder petrol Sonata 2.4. The Sonata CRDi uses a 2.0-litre common-rail direct-injection diesel with a variable geometry turbocharger worth 110kW and 305Nm. More impressive are the fuel economy figures, as it uses just six litres of fuel for every 100km travelled according to the official combined cycle test. The diesel Sonata is available with a five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic in SLX trim and as an automatic in the better specified Elite model.
