HYUNDAI is telling anyone who will listen that it’s finally getting serious about sportscars, as it lines up to launch its much vaunted N line of high performance machines in 2017.

And given that the brand has been around for a while now – it’s just clicked over 30 years in Australia – it’s probably about time.

There have been some half-hearted attempts over that period to inject some form of pizzazz into the brand – Tiburon, anyone? – but the closest it’s come is with its SR range.

Introduced in 2012, any Hyundai with an SR moniker has been lightly tweaked for better handling, and likely sports a bodykit, flashy wheels or even both.

With the advent of the N brand, though, it’s become more important to the company to be seen promoting cars with a bit more zing – and the Elantra SR Turbo is a prime example.

Running the same 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that first graced the Veloster Turbo, the Elantra SR Turbo also wears a chassis refresh that company bosses are suggesting set a new high watermark for the brand in Australia.
