HOLDEN Special Vehicles (HSV) executed another decisive milestone in the wind down of Commodore-based models in October last year, when it discontinued the venerable naturally aspirated LS3 V8 in all but its long-wheelbase Grange.

The move upgraded all remaining ClubSport, Maloo and Senator models to supercharged LSA power for one final big bang before the Commodore’s replacement arrives next year, but it appears the esteemed car-maker has found a few crated LS3s forgotten under a sheet and decided to create a limited special with them.

With the special editions, HSV is offering fans of the brand a “final buy opportunity” with 350 examples of the ClubSport R8 sedan and 100 Maloo R8 ute’s that resurrect the SV Black nameplate as well as the retired 6.2-litre atmo V8.

With a starting price of $62,990 before on-road costs, the SV Black is yours for a whopping $14,000 cheaper than the next most affordable HSV. So are the special pair a swan song free lunch or a reduced fat, diet option that will have you reaching for a chocolate bar in the afternoon?
