THE Type-R's improvements are all about performance. The hand-finished 1.8-litre 16-valve DOHC VTEC inline four-cylinder engine produces an impressive 141kW of power at 7900rpm and 178Nm of torque at 6300rpm. It features a lightweight, large diameter exhaust system with increased exhaust flow rate, hand-polished intake and exhaust ports and a single-port intake manifold, and high-compression low-friction pistons which serve to increase power.

Bridgestone performance tyres are fitted and a torque-sensitive helical limited-slip differential limits wheelspin, while a new close-ratio five-speed manual transmission improves shift quality. Acceleration is also aided by a weight reduction of 27kg. Improved handling characteristics stem from a lower centre of gravity and increased body rigidity, and a recalibrated suspension assists with stability and reduced bodyroll. Larger disc brakes and bigger calipers come with a revised anti-lock braking system.
