A FIVE-SPEED manual or electronically controlled four-speed automatic is available on CR-V. The automatic is engaged with a column shifter and features Honda's "grade logic control" which is designed to stamp out gear hunting when travelling uphill and to help engine braking downhill. CR-V uses Honda's on-demand Real Time four-wheel drive system, running in front-wheel drive for optimum fuel economy until it detects front-wheel slippage and transmits power through the rear wheels. A pair of hydraulic pumps controls the 4WD system, one attached to the front drive and the other to the rear. When wheel slip occurs, the imbalance in the pressures from the two pumps automatically engages a central clutch which transmits torque to the rear.
