NISSAN MAXIMA 4D SEDAN (1995-2000)
FREIGHT-train performance from the economical and silky V6 a highlight. Handling and roadholding are good in dry but traction goes in the wet. Stacks of equipment and space make up for dull exterior and interior styling.

SAAB 900 5D HATCHBACK (1994-1998)
SOLID build quality, good performance, high levels of safety, a comfortable and ergonomic interior, huge luggage area, plenty of features and a prestige nameplate are offset by dull handling and numb steering. Regular servicing means reliable, off-beat motoring.

PEUGEOT 406 4D SEDAN (1996-1999)
A LACK-LUSTRE performance from the 2.0-litre four but there are high levels of refinement, comfort, magic-carpet ride and style. Well-equipped, solidly built and tough enough for our roads. Spacious cabin and big boot make the 406 ideal family transport.

VOLVO 8 4D SEDAN (1995-1997)
VOLVO'S first front-drive car has surprisingly good chassis dynamics, gutsy performance and good economy. The 850S makes a virtue of boxyness with lots of useable space for people and luggage. Safe, well-equipped and ageing nicely. A most pleasant car.
