HOW Holden has managed to avoid pitching a properly car-based compact SUV in a market booming with them is beyond us, even if the ageing truck-like Captiva 5 fills that void.

So it’s a bit of a shock to learn that the Barina-derived Holden Trax is among the first of the modern sub-compact crossover contenders, putting the company at the forefront of a coalescing segment that, truthfully, nobody knows how consumers will react to.
