A DECADE is a long time to be without a seven-seater SUV that’s at home off-road, so it is understandable that Holden chose to overlook the fading Jackaroo nameplate for its latest ute-based 4x4 wagon.

Built in Thailand alongside the vehicle that shares most of its underpinnings, the Colorado 7 brings proper everything: seven-seat accommodation, bush-bashing 4WD capability and three-tonne towing capacity. Better still, the Holden undercuts its Prado opponent by several thousand dollars.

But is it enough to dethrone the popular Toyota?
