HONDA PRELUDE 2D COUPE (1991-1996)
THE Honda looks almost as good as the Calibra and was the first Prelude to really justify the title of sports coupe. The entry level S model has a 96kW, 2.1-litre engine and is nearly as well equipped as the Calibra. Lack of rear seat space for adults is a minus.

TOYOTA CELICA 2D LIFTBACK (1985-2001)
THE Celica SX does everything it is supposed to quite well but does not excel in any one area. It almost matches the Calibra for interior space but lacks the equipment of some of its rivals unless it was optioned up when new. Performance from the 2.2- litre, 100kW engine puts it in front of the Calibra.

BMW 318i 2D SEDAN (1983-1991)
THE drawcard for the 318i is the BMW badge and very high quality, which makes it a most durable car. The 1.8-litre engine has the least power of this group with 75kW but the rear-wheel drive and well developed steering and suspension make it entertaining to drive.

SAAB 900 4D SEDAN (1991-1993)
STYLING is uniquely Saab and stands out in a crowd even though it has been around for some time. Good steering, suspension and brakes make for a safe, balanced and comfortable car. The 2.1- litre, 16-valve engine produces 103kW so there is good performance with reasonable economy.
