POWERED by a revised version of the existing 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine, the new DOHC 16-valve Barina develops 66kW of power at 6000rpm and 120Nm of torque at 4000rpm. The engine features sequential fuel injection and electronic throttle control, which is operated via an electrical signal transferred from the accelerator pedal to an air inlet throttle mechanism. The system is designed to allow more precise control of throttle movements, lowering exhaust emissions and giving reliability gains through the minimisation of mechanical wear. Fuel consumption is claimed to have improved by up to three per cent on the city and highway cycle for the manual and seven per cent on the highway cycle for the auto. Combined city/highway figure for the manual is 6.5L/100km.
