A FIVE-SPEED manual and optional four-speed electronic-control automatic transmission are available across the Astra range. The manual shift mechanism is decoupled from the driveline movements to prevent lever movement and reduce transmission noise. The hydraulic clutch is designed to require only light pressure and provide better feel and quieter, smoother operation than a mechanical system. The auto has a sport, winter and economy mode plus a "neutral idle" feature where it slots into neutral when the engine is idling and the brake pedal is applied. It also has a safety lock which prevents the driver from shifting out of park without first applying the brake.
