CHINESE brand Foton is shooting for the stars with its Tunland dual-cab range, with pricing closer to mainstream rivals such as the Toyota HiLux than the V200 from fellow Chinese marque Great Wall.

Trying to pry buyers away from establish players such as Toyota – as well as the likes of Nissan, Ford, Mitsubishi, Mazda and Holden – is a tough task at the best of times, but at prices of up to $35,000, you can't help but feel that Foton importer FAA Automotive has its work cut out.

The Tunland has good cabin space, a large loading area and a solid – if unrefined – Cummins diesel engine, but some quality issues and a general lack of polish took away most of the shine.
